WHITEFACE - st LP 79 w Live At The Agora LP 79 w Change Of Face LP 81

A big thank you to ClassicMusic20 for just discovering this band and suggesting that it would be "a great pick to put on your blog' in his words and he is absolutely correct.  Starting out as a Wild Cherry sounding funky band then evolving into a more AOR band with a great live album in between.  For you fly skimmers that only download the main post, this week, like every week I try to completely blow your minds with each and every post but this week you'll be missing some great posts is you don't scroll down!

VA - BORN FREE LP w John Barry - Born Free OST LP 66 w The Do-Re-Mi Children's Chorus - Born Free LP w Hootenanny LP

This movie was all the rage when I was but a wee yout and found this all at Goodwill over the years on lunchbreak.  Starting to dip into the children's music and these two from Do-Re-Mi are really made for adults actually as well.  The hootenanny one I tacked on it a live affair with some of the loudest nice sounding applause I have ever heard on vinyl.  Artists on the comp include:  Nancy Wilson, Al Martino, Nelson Riddle, Peggy Lee and Matt Monro who sings the famous version of 'Born Free' as we all should be.

VA - GET IT ON LP 74

This is an absolutely top notch, smokin' hot (yeah first song is 'Smokin' in the Boy's Room') great vinyl shape killer compilation that I am glad I have by Ronco but not sure where I got it...probably Goodwill.  I pulled out my Billy Paul to post below and all these song versions I think are slightly different mixes by:  Brownsville Station, The Ohio Players, Jim Stafford, Johnny Nash, Barry White, Jerry Lewis, B.B. King, The Pointer Sisters (finally have this "Yes We Can" tune from Back In The Days of Soul radio playlist I used to listen to in college on Sunday nights then go on the bus to school and get a stack of $0.25 records in early nineties from Cheapo Records), Maureen McCovern, O'Jays, Clint Holmes (Playground in my Mind!!!), Dr. Hook And The Medicine Show, The Stylistics, Lobo, Four Tops (great rare version of the song T.S.O.L. covered Ain't No Woman Like The One I Got!!), Deodato (was missing their hit song Also Sprach Zarathrusta!!!), Dobie Gray (Drift Away song goes back to my youth!), Donna Fargo (The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA what a great song!!!), Billy Paul and Ian Thomas (Dave Thomas' brother from SCTV with an old favorite song of mine 'Painted Ladies').  GET IT ON ! ! ! ! !

BILLY PAUL - 360 Degrees Of LP 72 w War Of The Gods LP 73 w Live In Europe LP 74 w Only The Strong Survive LP 77 w First Class LP 79 w The Best Of (sides 3 & 4 only) LP 79

Since I had the CD of 360 I tacked those duplicate songs at the end but put the bonus track of his huge hit song Mrs. Jones as a live version right after all the vinyl.  Since I had just posted Stevie Wonder, I had to pull out his stuff too plus another version of his hit song is on the comp above.  Here is what Discogs says:  Real Name: Paul Williams

Profile:

Grammy Award winning American soul singer, most known for his 1972 number-one single, "Me and Mrs. Jones", born 1 December 1934 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, died 24 April 2016 in Blackwood, New Jersey, USA.

BIONIC BOOGIE - st LP 77 w Gregg Diamond Hot Butterfly LP 78

This one feels like I know the sound very well at least on side one record one as it sounds so familiar and is kind of a missing link to me with this type of music.  This meets the disco album of the week and actually is two platters since last week I mislabeled the disco album for that week which is now identified as the 'Thank God It's Friday' copycat record and not the other one that I changed the text on.

FREDDIE McGREGOR - HARD TO GET CD 93

Thought I would pull a couple CD's from my stacks in the album photos as it is Dub-September over at our neighbor blogger Nothin' Says Somethin' and Nathan has really been posting some rare classic dub reggae this year again--a category that has been hard for me to collect.  From Discogs:  Fredrick Alphanso McGregor

Profile:

Jamaican singer born in Clarendon, Jamaica on June 27, 1956. At age seven, he started singing backup for a local ska harmony duo called the Clarendonians and do his first recording at 10 on the name "Little Freddie or "young Freddie" and as a duo with Ernest Wilson aka "Freddie & Fitsy".

McGregor stayed at Studio One for much of the '70s. He sang lead for groups like Generation Gap and Soul Syndicate, and also recorded off and on as a solo act during the '70s.

In 1975, McGregor converted to Rastafarianism. Still with Studio One and working with Earl "Chinna" Smith, he recorded several classic songs.

In 1980, he recorded the great "Bobby Babylon" LP for Studio One that becomes a classic Roots Reggae album.

In 1981, McGregor scored a huge hit single with "Big Ship," which catapulted him to the front rank of reggae stars in the immediate post-Marley era, along with Dennis Brown and Gregory Isaacs.

Father of Stephen "The Genius" McGregor, Daniel "Chino" McGregor and Yeshemabeth McGregor.

Runs Big Ship.

July - July 1968

Have had this sitting on my desk for awhile now and not sure why I looked them up but anyways might as well post now since I missed their month.  From Discogs:  July were a psychedelic rock band from Ealing, London, UK, that were professionally active between 1968 and 1969. They grew out of The Second Thoughts and The Tomcats. The band's music was a blend of psychedelic rock and psychedelic pop, marked by lush harmonies, acoustic guitars, keyboards, and intricate lead guitar work.

Although none of the band's records managed to chart in the UK or the US, July are today best remembered for their songs "My Clown", "Dandelion Seeds" and "The Way", which have all been included on a number of compilation albums over the years.

July reformed in 2009 with four of the original members: Tom Newman, Pete Cook, Chris Jackson and Alan James, recording further albums.

WANG chung - Points On The Curve LP 83 w Let's Go! EP 86 w To Live And Die In L.A. LP 85 w Mosaic LP 86

REPOST Request:  Might have to track down the earliest release with the original spelling per Discogs:  An '80s New Wave band, was founded in 1979 as Huang Chung by Jack Hues (lead vocals, keyboards, guitar), Nick Feldman (vocals, keyboards, bass guitar) and Darren Costin (vocals, drums, percussion, keyboards).

In 1981 the group expanded to a quartet, with the addition of sax player David Burnand. In keeping with the all-pseudonymous nature of the band, Burnand was known as Hogg Robinson for the first Arista single, and later, simply as Hogg.

Their self-titled debut album was released by Arista Records in 1982 after several profile raising singles.

Meanwhile, after the release, David Burnand left due to "musical differences".

In late 1982, Huang Chung they signed with American label Geffen Records. They changed the spelling of their name to Wang Chung (at David Geffen’s suggestion, to make pronunciation easier).

THE ROYALETTES - THE ELEGANT SOUND OF LP 66

This one harkens me back to when I spent $295 at Banana Records for an original press of the Phil Spector-discovered band in the streets of New York called the Crystals.  This band being from Baltimore also starting at a young age as they formed in high school.  The lead singer has a really cool high pitched male-sounding vocal akin to the Moments/Delfonics and others with great songs I will hold onto this Goodwill find as long as I have the Crystals that is for sure.  Enjoy!

THE ROCHES - st LP 79 w Nurds LP 80 w Keep On Doing LP 82 w Another World LP 85 w No Trespassing EP 86 w We Three Kings LP 90 w Moonswept LP 06 And Maggie and Terre Roche - Seductive Reasoning LP 74 - 75 w A Dove CD 92 w Suzzy Roche - HOLY SMOKES CD 97

REPOST Request:  What I wrote before:  Getting their start as a duo with Paul Simon, I got to see their network TV debut as a trio back in 79/80 as I remember it vaguely.  Great lyrics and attitude.  Their sound evolved with the times as the latter stuff is also very good.
