Grace Jones - Portfolio LP 76 w Fame LP 78 w Muse LP 79 w Warm Leatherette LP 80 w Nightclubbing LP 81 w Living My Life LP 82 w Slave To The Rhythm LP 85 w Inside Story LP 86

REPOST Request:  What I wrote before:  Loved discovering her in the MTV days, she was born in Jamaica and moved to Syracuse, NY and became a model, musician and actress.  Per Discogs:  Real Name:

Grace Beverly Jones

Profile:

Jamaican singer, actress and supermodel born on May 19, 1948 [some sources claim 1950 or 1952] in Spanish Town, Jamaica, West Indies. She moved to Syracuse, New York, in her early teens, where her parents had relocated and founded the Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ.

She moved to New York at 18 and began a modelling career that took her to Paris where she worked for Yves Saint Laurent, Azzedine Alaïa and Kenzo Takada and photographers such as Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin. While in Paris, she branched out into a recording career, first as a disco diva, working with Tom Moulton, before evolving towards a reggae / new wave sound created at Compass Point Studios with Sly & Robbie and marked by striking visuals created by her then partner Jean-Paul Goude.

Her first connection with music perhaps is her uncredited appearance on the cover of the 1973 reissue of Billy Paul - Ebony Woman.

She published her autobiography in 2015, I'll Never Write My Memoirs (a line taken from her song Art Groupie), co-written with Paul Morley, in which she comes back on her early childhood in Jamaica, denies some longstanding rumours and fuels a few new ones.

Grace is the granddaughter of Dan Williams (8), daughter of Marjorie Jones, sister of Bishop Noel Jones and Chris Jones (20), and mother of Paulo Goude.

FREDDIE McGREGOR - HARD TO GET CD 93

Thought I would pull a couple CD's from my stacks in the album photos as it is Dub-September over at our neighbor blogger Nothin' Says Somethin' and Nathan has really been posting some rare classic dub reggae this year again--a category that has been hard for me to collect.  From Discogs:  Fredrick Alphanso McGregor

Profile:

Jamaican singer born in Clarendon, Jamaica on June 27, 1956. At age seven, he started singing backup for a local ska harmony duo called the Clarendonians and do his first recording at 10 on the name "Little Freddie or "young Freddie" and as a duo with Ernest Wilson aka "Freddie & Fitsy".

McGregor stayed at Studio One for much of the '70s. He sang lead for groups like Generation Gap and Soul Syndicate, and also recorded off and on as a solo act during the '70s.

In 1975, McGregor converted to Rastafarianism. Still with Studio One and working with Earl "Chinna" Smith, he recorded several classic songs.

In 1980, he recorded the great "Bobby Babylon" LP for Studio One that becomes a classic Roots Reggae album.

In 1981, McGregor scored a huge hit single with "Big Ship," which catapulted him to the front rank of reggae stars in the immediate post-Marley era, along with Dennis Brown and Gregory Isaacs.

Father of Stephen "The Genius" McGregor, Daniel "Chino" McGregor and Yeshemabeth McGregor.

Runs Big Ship.
