Here is Jesse Jacksons words he reads on the "Push For Excellence" album:
The challenge to "PUSH for Excellence" is a universal upward pull and option available to every person, group or nation in each generation. The call to EXCEL is a reasoned and reasonable quest, but life is more than reason. Life requires information and inspiration. It requires education and destination, beat and balance, and soul and science. We need to feel as well as know that 'I Am Somebody," that my life counts, that it has cosmic significance.
Music, art and religion help to put life in that sacred dimension, and to elevate our sights and perspectives. It puts breath and spirit in our dry bones. The National PUSH EXCEL choir, and each of the contributors to this album, try to communicate that message in their own way and words and individual styles on the songs contained herein.
On this album Operation PUSH is trying to speak to the inner WILL of men and women, boys and girls--through the medium of music--to inspire them to believe that it is not your aptitude, but your attitude that will determine your altitude--with a little intestinal fortitude. We are trying to challenge young people SPIRITUALLY to put hope in their brains rather than dope in their veins. Why? Because we believe that their mind is a pearl and they can learn anything in the world. For we know that if a sound mind can conceive it and a pure heart can believe it, we know they can achieve it--whether it be healing the wounds or racial separation, beating our swords into plow shears and our spears into pruning hooks, eliminating illiteracy or finding a cure for cancer.
In the midst of skepticism, cynicism and pessimism Operation PUSH dares to issue a challenge to "PUSH for Excellence"--even against the odds.
