REPOST Request:  What I wrote last time:   The flute I consider as a magical instrument that instantaneously shifts you into a different dimension.  It can be considered standard for spaghetti westerns or a key instrument in some exotica genre tunes but at the same time fits all genres.  From his debut sleeve:  Don't label his music yet.  Time Weisberg is a flute player whose music is somewhere in between rock and jazz.  But even this labels him too much.  True, he fits in well with the rock scene when he appears with a name like Frank Zappa.  But he also beautifully compliments songstress Buffy Saint-Marie (have a new one from her for next week's Fourth of July post!!).  And as the Monterey Peninsula Herald said of him at the 1970 Monterey Jazz Festival, Tim Weisberg's act "was the most exciting group of the evening."

The important thing to note is that the other two acts that night were the Modern Jazz Quartet and Duke Ellington himself.  After the concert Ellington and Wood Herman discussed Weisberg.  They liked what they had heard but couldn't pigeon-hole his sound.  Time Weisberg has created a style yet undefined.  He is what he is--an exciting young musician and artist.  I have his album with Dan Fogelberg as well but saving it for that post in the near future.  All from Goodwill too!

I saw Tim in 1976 when he toured on his live album and Listen to the City from the previous year. His band was airtight and he was magnificent. He had a circular rack on stage that was stocked with a wide array of flutes, which he toggled between all night, but in the dead center of the rack was the biggest flute I've ever seen in my life. It looked like it might actually be larger than my leg. All night long, people in the crowd were shouting, "Play the big one!" When he finally acquiesced, he ran the thing through a number of delay and effects pedals which allowed him to effectively accompany himself on the giant flute. It was astonishing, and quite possibly more entertaining than Ian Anderson (from a strictly flutecentric perspective). Thanks for posting this collection...there are a couple of gaps in my Weisberg section that will be filled.
