TOMMY BOLIN - Teaser LP 75 w Private Eyes LP 76 w The Bottom Shelf Volume One CD 96 w From The Archives Volume Two CD 98 w Zephyr - st LP 69 w Going Back To California LP 71 w Deep Purple - Come Taste The Band CD 75

REPOST and ADD ON:  Great way to celebrate the 4th of July with Tommy.  Been waiting to finally rip his second solo that I am adding here (reminds me of Rory's powerful album) along with the two archive CD's that the Tommy meta group recently posted about as well as the Deep Purple CD that was chosen to show how Tommy contributed to the group (very long discusion).  The two Zephyr albums I had posted and that later two that he was not on I found on youtube nnd blogs so will post later.
Tommy possessed a chameleon like nature, and had melodies pouring out of him to where he could adapt to any situation and help crank out albums in bands he had nothing to do with previously, and in fact, barely ever listened to.  His musical gift  was in his mother’s family DNA, and his dad taking him to see Elvis before he was five years old, in the only time he ever came to Sioux City, with the first rock tour ever, set the stage for Tommy to become one of the most gifted musicians of his era.

Fun story I once heard about Tommy Bolin; fed up with what he considered a nowhere existence in Iowa the teenage Tommy grabbed his guitar, a few changes of clothing and every cent he had and hopped a bus heading west. His life savings only got him as far as Denver, CO. Exiting the bus depot the young lad set off in search of a place to lay his head for the night. A few blocks from the depot he heard a band rehearsing in what turned out to be an empty warehouse. Tommy banged on a door during a lull in practice and introduced himself to whoever answered his knock. He explained that he was a guitarist in search of a band and was wondering if he could jam with the band. Tommy was eyed somewhat questioningly and his claim of guitar prowess greatly suspected due to his evident youth but he was invited within and expected to be shown the door once again shortly afterwards. Supposedly the person who answered the door was David Givens and the band practicing would become Zephyr. True? Who know, but I find it an entertaining story.

Here is a (loosely) related Bolin item; the lone album by a band called DVC.

DVC can, arguably, best be described as a modestly talented bar band from the early 1980's whose sole claim to fame (and quite possibly the only reason they got a record contract) was the fact that their drummer is Tommy's brother, Johnnie. The album includes a pedestrian cover of Tommy's "Teaser" alongside a cover of "Goosebumps" that Ian Lloyd did so much better two years prior. Johnnie went on to drum for Black Oak Arkansas (though I don't believe in any version of the band that entered a recording studio) and to preside over the Tommy Bolin archives. Not my rip.

Well, duh! Delete that last post. Didn't realize that you ripped DVC. Maybe this is where I got it from originally. Sorry 'bout that.

Jon,
WoW I never read about Johnnie before a big thanks for helping out the blog this week here and in other areas. Yeah, you might have got it from me but I will bring in that old rip when I get back from the holiday at work where I post. Going to leave up your comment though as I think I will use some of the text for the DVC post.

Have a Happy 4th of July!!!!
Cheers Mate!
