Not a Band, Singer-Songwriter (And a Stage Name, Not His Real Name) and Interesting Fact, He wrote the Dr. Hook Hit "When You're in Love a Beautiful Woman" and co-wrote with Eddie Rabbitt his big hit "I Love the Rainy Nights" And With "When You're in Love" that is an interesting story and it wasn't originally written the way Dr. Hook had it, it was written as a more as a Smokey Robinson type song and Dr. Hook Weren't the first choice to do that song, Engelbert Humperdinck was about to do it and I'll explain the story (it's a cool story) Even Stevens was living in a trailer in Nashville and was a street musician and had songs recorded by Eddie Rabbitt at the time. Then he meets this girl name Sherry Grooms and He fell in love with her and he started dating her for a few months. She was a singer and was in a band. One day, When he went to see her band live, And was trying to meet up with her. All of the guys starting wooing at her cause she was good looking. That got Even jealous, So he went in his car, went in his trailer, and wrote the song in 5 minutes The song is about jealously and paranoia. Now with the Engelbert Humperdinck story, Even's Uncle Jack was Best Friend's With Engelbert and was his golfing buddy, His uncle would always call Even and ask if he had any songs, Even would say no because he thought it was Cheesy Pigeon songs With Engelbert through his uncle. So When He Wrote “When You're In Love” He thought that'll fit perfect for Engelbert, Since he just cut “After the Lovin'” So he called his uncle, Went to L.A. Went in a hotel and had drinks, then went to Engelbert's mansion on Sunset Strip. And his mansion use to be Jayne Mansfield's mansion. It had a heart-shaped swimming pool and 13 Floored Bathrooms. He, His Uncle, And Engelbert, Hung out, Played darts and had drinks, and Engelbert goes 'I Heard you have a song for me?' And he replies 'Yes' and Engelbert Responds 'I've just bought this $30,000 sound system, let's check it out' So he played the tape on the sound system, and when it started. the System swallowed the tape, Even goes 'Your Sound System Ate My Tape!' And Engelbert goes 'Your Tape Wrecked My Sound System!' Even didn't bring a guitar with him, Engelbert didn't have a guitarist with him, So Engelbert responds 'Send me a copy' So Engelbert and him hung out, Even flew back to Nashville depress because he was looking forward for Engelbert to record it. So he recorded a demo with the girl the song was aimed at (She Was Providing the background vocals) Then one day, Shel Silverstein, (Which you have, and he’s the writer of Dr. Hook's previous hits “Sylvia's Mother” and “Cover of the Rolling Stone”) Drops by the studio and asks him 'Hey Even, Dr. Hook is cutting a new album and they've ask me for some songs, they didn't like the songs I gave them, I think your the guy with the songs, Can I bring the producer over and will check them out?' And then that night, Shel drops by with Dr. Hook’s producer Ron Haffkine (whom we’ve just sadly lost in October of 2023) Even and his girlfriend happened to be recording the demo “When You're in Love” And Haffkine goes 'Let's cut it' And here’s a little extra, When Dr. Hook finishing recording “When You’re in Love” Ron Haffkine brought Even in to hear the final mix. Haffkine was like 'What you think?' Even says 'It's getting there' and Haffkine gets confused and was like 'What you mean, It's already there' And Even goes 'But I don't hear it' And when the song became a hit! Even was like 'Man, This Guy Is A Genius' Haha, Cool Story, You don't get those type of stories nowadays, Hope You Enjoyed It.
