We were getting updates from Joe Carducci over recent weeks and finally SPOT (all CAPS with dot in the 'O') died this week at 72. This has taken a week to set in for me as I learn from Mike Watt and many others (here is the best post with playlist forever on the DU sidebar now: Tim 'Napalm' Stegall THANK YOU) !that he was involved in all my favorite punk records that have been so key in my life like for instance didn't know one of my favorite albums by N.O.T.A. (None Of The Above) which I got for my walkman after taking my Junior High personal vow of non-conformity so the title appealed to me when it came out which had been left a mess by Bob Mould of Husker Du well here are the words from their singer/guitarist Jeff Klein:
I was on a beautiful beach in Mexico when I learned of the passing of "Spot". It was a pretty big honor for our lowly garage band in the midst of nowhere USA to get to work with a then already legendary producer who had worked on so many of the records that we listened too. We had recorded our LP in Austin Tx and tried to do way too many songs in way too little time. The result was a mess. We probably would have scraped it except Rabid Cat had too much money in it to let it go so they called in Spot to see if he could save it. We went back down to Austin to meet Spot and crossed our fingers. He was very mild mannered and methodical and waded through the messy mix until it was useable again. Without his contribution that record would have been released in it's mangled form and we would probably not have continued as a band.
Spot was a great talent. I wish we could have gotten to know him better. The world has lost someone special, Rest in peace Spot.
In the tradition of Mark Underground I thought I would post the two most recent MP4's I made, one is from the early U.S.A. punk rock forming time (although the music kind of sucks it is counterpointal to the music SPOT with incredible sound made by finding just the right microphone spot to record sometimes backing it up) that was a made for TV movie which I kind of remember from NIGHT FLIGHT late night TV in those days that is now playing stuff again and they say spawned the RIOT GRRRL movement (although I can see why only a few left on Amazon in case Rhino.com isn't making the DVD anymore, I will let link expire) called:
Ladies and Gentlemen...The Fabulous Stains: MP4 LINK 1
and last night something for the future albeit technocratic: MP4 Link 2

All the production accolades seem to go to the Steve Albinis, Rick Rubins etc. of this world, but Spot's work mattered the most, to me anyway. They has the sales, but Spot had the innovation and the quality. I know the name, but didn't fully appreciate the scope until the obits started listing them. Damn, a great loss, but the world was lucky he was where he was when he was. RIP.
