The missing fourth is 1975's FRAMPTON, which - like the first three - quietly established Pete as a solo artist with a credible catalogue of self-penned material. Nobody remembers it now, but Frampton seemed the clear victor in his split with Humble Pie, who were plummeting off the cliff's edge by this time.

Of course, the next year would bring the infamous FRAMPTON COMES ALIVE, after which it was difficult to take him seriously (and no one tried to). But even that dreaded double-live opus, when you listen to it today, is surprisingly good....it's a straight-up rock album, which seems to take people by surprise as they were primed to laugh at some ridiculous lost Osmond Brother or something. It's a little too heavy on the talk-box, and God only knows who or what convinced him he should cover an iconic Stones tune, but, like most musical artifacts of the 1970s, it's probably better than you remember.

Anyway, if you're one of those folks who just can't get past FCA, you can safely enjoy these first four Frampton records, all of which were recorded in a world where there was no such thing as FRAMPTON COMES ALIVE.....yet.

A Happy Fourth to one and all.

PS: could've sworn I dropped you a note on this yesterday; if it shows up belatedly beside this one, that's why.

Thanks S.D., I was wondering. I got to give him kudos as an old favorite band I went to see a lot was Dinosaur Jr. and they did a smokin' cover of 'Show Me The Way' worth checking out sometime on youtube.

He absolutely did NOT start "the double-live trend"....among (many) others, Deep Purple's MADE IN JAPAN got there ahead of him. (So did Peter's ex-mates, Humble Pie, with ROCKIN' THE FILLMORE.)

The real landmark is that, although COMES ALIVE set him up for life and then some, it was also the last time anybody took Peter Frampton seriously....even The Simpsons had him playing straight man to Pink Floyd's inflatable sheep! Seriously though, one of these days somebody's going to notice the four lps he cut in between leaving Humble Pie and COMES ALIVE are all excellent lps that were part singer-songwriter and part guitar-hero, just before the industry standardized this approach into AOR (and made us all violently throw up in response)
