Gene Chandler
His real name was Gene Chandler. He went by that name until the "Duke of Earl" song was a big hit, and then he was known as the Duke of Earl for the rest of his career.
I got curious and looked Gene Chandler up on Wikipedia. Apparently, he's still performing around the Chicago area at 81 years old! And his hits spanned the eras of doo-wop, rhythm & blues, soul, funk, and disco. That's pretty amazing!
