Spent 5 years in the U.S. Merchant Marines during World War II. After discharge, worked clubs in Bakersfield. Recorded as "Terry Preston" in the early 1950's.

Acted in several movies. Inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame (2010) and the Missouri Country Music Hall of Fame (2006).
