First played the cornet in Salvation Army bands. Resident in the UK from 1954, worked with the group led by Leslie "Jiver" Hutchinson. Later a sideman with Graham Collier for forty-six years and a member of the Pierre Dørge & New Jungle Orchestra.

Collier made excellent contributions to British jazz in the late 60s / early 70s. His philosophy of "moving music off the paper" blurred the line between composition and improvisation in his ensembles.
